Lessons vs Guided Rides
A riding lesson focuses on skill: posture, balance, how to communicate with the horse, and progressing through gaits under an instructor's supervision, usually in an arena or enclosed area. Lessons are often booked as a series.
A guided ride focuses on the experience: you follow a guide along a route and enjoy the scenery. You still receive basic guidance, but the aim is not formal instruction. That is what we offer.
What Beginners Learn on a Guided Ride
Before and during the ride, your guide explains the essentials:
- How to mount and dismount safely, with help.
- How to hold the reins and how to ask the horse to stop and turn.
- How to sit comfortably and relax in the saddle.
- How to follow the horse in front and keep a steady pace.
Many first-time riders are surprised by how comfortable they feel by the end of an hour. Tell us you are a beginner when booking so we can take it into account.

Choosing Your First Ride
The one-hour Exclusive Jungle ride ($50) is a popular first ride: it is shorter and follows shaded rainforest trails. If you would like to ride on the beach, the two-hour Sunset ride ($75) is another option; let us know your experience so we can advise.
If You Want Formal Lessons
Look for a riding school or equestrian center with qualified instructors, a safe enclosed arena, clear lesson structures and appropriate safety equipment. Ask about lesson length, group size, the horses used for beginners and what you will learn in each session. We are not affiliated with any riding school and cannot recommend specific providers.

Tips for First-Time Riders
Wear long pants to prevent chafing and closed-toe shoes with a small heel if you have them. Eat a light meal beforehand, drink water and apply sunscreen. Breathe, relax your shoulders and let the horse move — tension makes riding harder. Ask the guide anything. Read our full article on horseback riding in Jacó for beginners.
Building Confidence Over More Than One Ride
Although we do not offer lesson programs, some guests choose to ride more than once during their stay. A common pattern is the one-hour Jungle ride early in the trip, then the two-hour Sunset ride a few days later once they feel more comfortable in the saddle. Each tour is booked separately. Let us know when you book a second ride that you have already ridden with us, so we can take your experience into account.
